Renowned Art Curator to Give Shenkman Lecture

February 24, 2011 - News Release

Hou Hanru, world-renowned curator of the San Francisco Art Institute, will give the fifth annual Shenkman Lecture in Contemporary Art March 2 at 5:30 p.m. in War Memorial Hall.

Hosted by the School of Fine Art and Music, the event is free and open to the public.

Born in 1963 in Guangzhou, China, Hanru graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and worked in Paris as an art critic and curator for 16 years. He moved to San Francisco in 1990 and is director of exhibitions and public programs and chair of the exhibition and museum studies program at the San Francisco Art Institute. He has curated and co-curated numerous exhibitions and consulted for many international institutions.

His collaborative curatorial and writing projects are highly experimental, examining the dynamic relationships among art, architecture, urbanism and social change under globalization.

Internationally, Hanru has given numerous talks and served on juries of art and architecture awards. He writes frequently for exhibition catalogues, magazines and books, and published On the Mid-Ground in 2002.

The Shenkman lectures are funded through a donation by Dasha Shenkman, a Canadian art collector living in the United Kingdom.

In conjunction with the lecture, students in U of G’s School of Fine Art will host their annual open studios March 2 from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on campus in Blackwood Hall, the Firehall, Zavitz Hall and Alexander Hall. The open studios offer visitors a rare look at the development of new work in the art program. Fifteen graduate and undergraduate art students will be displaying their work.
